What do a cosy coffee shop and a Pilates studio have in common? In Chippenham, the answer is Millie Jones, a local business owner with a knack for turning passion into place.

Millie’s the co-founder of Coffee on the Corner, a much loved stop for a coffee and matcha in Chippenham. But behind the scenes, she had another dream brewing…one that involved less espresso, more exhale.

For months, Millie was commuting to London to teach Pilates classes, caught between the work she loved and a lifestyle that didn’t quite fit. “I wanted to do more in my own community,” she says. “I just didn’t know how to start.”

That changed when she joined The Refinery, our eight week business growth course delivered through Wiltshire Council’s fully funded Start Up programme. Designed for early stage business owners, The Refinery helped Millie bring her idea for a local wellness studio into focus.

Over eight weeks, she worked with experienced business advisors to map out her vision, shape a viable model, and gain the confidence to move forward. “The Refinery gave me the confidence to tackle different aspects of my business,” she says. “The Future Smiths simplified things I thought weren’t possible.”

After the course, we worked with Millie 1:1 to apply for a grant, supporting her with the funding she needed to equip her space with specialist Pilates apparatus.

The result? The Space to Move, a beautifully curated Pilates studio in the heart of Chippenham. A place for people to pause, strengthen, and reconnect. And a brilliant example of what happens when the right support meets the right moment.

Millie’s story is one of many growing through Wiltshire’s Start Up programme. Whether you’re brewing an idea, growing something early stage, or ready to go all in, there’s a pathway for you:

Kindle – For when the idea won’t leave you alone.

The Refinery – For early stage businesses ready to grow.

Catalyst – 1:1 coaching to help you go further, faster.

And yes, it’s all fully funded. Including grants of up to £15,000 to help cover essential start up costs.

In recent years, there’s been a growing wave of entrepreneurial spirit sweeping through rural areas, particularly in regions like Wiltshire. This isn’t just about escaping city life for a quieter existence; it’s about seizing unique opportunities that rural settings offer for sustainable business practices. But making a small business sustainable in rural areas comes with its own set of challenges and opportunities.

For rural entrepreneurs, this means finding innovative ways to build businesses that are not only profitable but also environmentally and socially responsible. This guide aims to provide insights into how you can achieve just that. We’ll explore the unique characteristics of rural markets, strategies for building a sustainable business model, and practical tips for overcoming common challenges. Plus, we have some inspiring case studies and expert insights from The Future Smiths’ co-founders, Duncan and Simone.

Understanding Rural Markets and Their Unique Potential

Rural markets are unlike any other. They offer a distinctive landscape that can be both challenging and rewarding. On one hand, these markets often have limited access to resources, infrastructure, and larger customer bases. On the other hand, they present unique opportunities for businesses that are willing to adapt and innovate.

One of the key advantages of rural markets is their potential for sustainable business practices. With local resources readily available and a strong sense of community, rural entrepreneurs can create businesses that have a positive impact on both the economy and the environment. Simone from The Future Smiths notes, “By integrating local resources and expertise, rural businesses can thrive in their unique setting, creating value for their community and the environment.”

Rural areas also offer a chance to tap into niche markets that may be overlooked by larger corporations. This can lead to innovative products and services that cater specifically to the needs and preferences of local customers.

Building a Sustainable Business Model

Creating a sustainable business model is a crucial step for rural entrepreneurs. This involves not only focusing on environmental sustainability but also fostering economic resilience and community engagement.

A sustainable business model should leverage local resources, such as raw materials and labour, to minimize environmental impact and reduce costs. It should also focus on community engagement, building strong relationships with local stakeholders and customers. This can be achieved through initiatives such as sourcing locally, creating jobs, and supporting local causes.

Another important aspect of a sustainable business model is adaptability. Rural businesses must be able to respond to changing market conditions, customer demands, and environmental factors. This requires a flexible approach to business planning and operations.

Case Studies of Successful Rural Businesses

Real-world examples can provide valuable insights and inspiration for rural entrepreneurs. Here are a few case studies of successful sustainable businesses in rural areas:

The Mind Tree Café – a community interest company in Rowde offering low cost counselling and a space in their local village for other wellbeing services and a place to meet and eat. By bringing an old business back to life, they’re also providing key services needed where they live.

Wiltshire Scrap Store – an award winning environmental and community charity situated on the outskirts of Lacock. They collect resources that would otherwise go to landfill and redistribute them for creative activities and projects of all kinds, from arts and crafts to DIY.

Eco Wood Rings – crafting ethical engagement rings, unique wedding rings, eternity rings or for any other occasion using reclaimed wood

These businesses demonstrate that with creativity and commitment, rural entrepreneurs can build successful enterprises that benefit both their communities and the planet.

Practical Tips for Overcoming Challenges

Building a sustainable business in a rural area isn’t without its challenges. However, with the right strategies and mindset, these obstacles can be overcome. Here are some practical tips:

Leverage Technology: Use digital tools to streamline operations, reach new customers, and manage resources more efficiently. Online platforms can help expand your reach beyond local markets.

Network and Collaborate: Build relationships with other local businesses and organisations. Collaboration can lead to cost-sharing, resource pooling, and new opportunities.

Seek Support and Guidance: Take advantage of resources and support available for rural entrepreneurs. Programs offered by organisations like ours can provide valuable insights and mentorship.

Focus on Quality and Niche Markets: Differentiate your business by offering high-quality products or services that cater to specific customer needs. This can help you stand out in a competitive market.

Stay Informed and Adaptable: Keep abreast of industry trends, customer preferences, and regulatory changes. Being adaptable allows you to pivot and stay ahead of potential challenges.

The Role of Digital Marketing in Rural Business Success

In today’s digital age, having an online presence is crucial for any business, including those in rural areas. Digital marketing offers cost-effective ways to increase visibility, reach new customers, and engage with your audience. For rural businesses, this can level the playing field with larger competitors.

Key digital marketing strategies include optimizing your website and content for search engines, leveraging social media platforms to connect with your audience, and using email marketing to nurture customer relationships. Additionally, local SEO tactics can help attract nearby customers, while e-commerce platforms can expand your reach to national and international markets.

“The importance of digital literacy and community connections for rural businesses to grow sustainably cannot be overstated,” say Duncan and Simone from The Future Smiths. “By investing in digital marketing, rural entrepreneurs can drive growth and sustainability for their businesses.”

The Future of Sustainable Small Businesses in Rural Areas

The future of sustainable small businesses in rural areas is bright. With increasing awareness of environmental issues and a growing demand for ethical and locally sourced products, rural entrepreneurs are well-positioned to thrive. By focusing on sustainability, innovation, and community engagement, they can build strong, resilient businesses that contribute positively to their communities and the planet.

Entrepreneurs play a vital role in this transformation. Their passion, creativity, and determination drive change and inspire others to follow suit. By seizing the opportunities presented by rural markets and implementing sustainable practices, they can lead the way in building a brighter, more sustainable future.

A well-structured business plan serves as your ultimate roadmap. It is essential for outlining your vision, securing funding, and guiding your startup through its early stages. This article will provide you with a comprehensive guide to creating an effective business plan, ensuring you are well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Understanding Your Audience Tailoring Your Plan

Every successful business plan begins with a deep understanding of your target audience. Tailoring your plan to meet the needs and expectations of potential investors, partners, or stakeholders is crucial. By identifying their interests and concerns, you can craft a plan that resonates with them and highlights the unique value your startup offers.

Consider the preferences and priorities of each audience segment. For investors, focus on financial projections and growth potential. For partners, emphasize collaboration opportunities and shared goals. This targeted approach will enhance the effectiveness of your business plan and increase the likelihood of achieving your objectives.

Remember, a well-tailored plan not only communicates your vision but also demonstrates your awareness of the market landscape and your ability to adapt and thrive within it.

Market Research Identifying Opportunities and Challenges

Market research is the foundation of any robust business plan. It provides valuable insights into industry trends, customer preferences, and competitive dynamics. By conducting thorough research, you can identify opportunities to capitalize on and challenges to overcome.

Start by analysing your target market segments. Understand their needs, pain points, and purchasing behaviour. This knowledge will enable you to effectively position your products or services and address unmet demands. Additionally, evaluate your competitors to identify gaps in the market and devise strategies to differentiate your startup.

Armed with comprehensive market research, you can confidently outline your business’s unique value proposition and chart a course for sustainable growth. This section of your business plan will demonstrate your industry expertise and strategic foresight to potential stakeholders.

Defining Business Goals and Objectives

Clear and well-defined business goals and objectives are paramount to the success of your startup. They serve as a guiding compass, providing direction and focus for your efforts. When crafting this section of your business plan, ensure your goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART).

Begin by outlining your long-term vision for the company. What do you hope to achieve in the next five to ten years? Break this down into short-term objectives that act as stepping stones towards your overarching goals. These could include revenue targets, market expansion plans, or product development milestones.

By articulating your goals and objectives, you not only clarify your aspirations but also offer a clear roadmap for your team and stakeholders. This alignment fosters a sense of purpose and commitment, driving everyone towards a shared vision of success.

Creating a Detailed Company Description

Your company description sets the stage for your business plan, providing an overview of your startup’s identity, mission, and values. This section should convey the essence of your brand and its unique offerings.

Begin by introducing your company name, location, and legal structure. Highlight your mission statement, which encapsulates the purpose and values that guide your business. Describe the core products or services you offer, emphasizing their distinct features and benefits.

Additionally, provide an overview of your target market and competitive advantages. What sets your startup apart from others in the industry? This section should paint a vivid picture of your company’s identity, creating a compelling narrative that captures the interest of potential investors and partners.

Developing a Strategic Marketing Plan

A well-crafted marketing plan is essential for driving growth and establishing a strong brand presence. This section of your business plan should outline your marketing strategies and tactics, ensuring you effectively reach and engage your target audience.

Begin by defining your target market segments and buyer personas. Understand their demographics, preferences, and purchasing behaviour. This knowledge will guide your marketing efforts and enable you to tailor your messaging and campaigns accordingly.

Next, outline your marketing channels and tactics. Consider digital marketing strategies such as social media, content marketing, and search engine optimisation (SEO). Traditional methods like print advertising or direct mail may also be relevant, depending on your audience.

By detailing your marketing plan, you demonstrate your ability to effectively promote your startup and generate demand for your products or services. This section showcases your understanding of the market landscape and your commitment to driving growth through strategic marketing initiatives.

Organisational Structure and Management Team

A well-defined organisational structure and a strong management team are crucial for the success of your startup. This section of your business plan should outline your company’s hierarchy, roles, and responsibilities, highlighting the expertise and experience of your team members.

Begin by describing your organisational structure, including key departments and reporting lines. Clarify the roles and responsibilities of each team member, ensuring everyone understands their contributions to the company’s goals. This clarity fosters accountability and streamlines decision-making processes.

Additionally, provide profiles of key members of your management team. Highlight their qualifications, industry experience, and unique skills that contribute to the success of your startup. Investors and stakeholders will be reassured knowing that capable leaders are steering the ship.

By presenting a clear organisational structure and showcasing your talented management team, you instil confidence in potential investors and partners, demonstrating your readiness to execute your business plan effectively.

Financial Projections and Analysis

Accurate and realistic financial projections are vital components of your business plan. They provide a snapshot of your startup’s financial health and demonstrate your ability to manage resources effectively. This section should include key financial statements and forecasts.

Begin by presenting your projected income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement. These documents should cover a period of at least three to five years, offering insights into your revenue, expenses, profitability, and cash flow. Ensure your projections are based on realistic assumptions and supported by thorough research.

Additionally, include a break-even analysis, which outlines the point at which your startup will cover its costs and begin generating profits. This analysis provides valuable insights into the financial viability of your business and helps investors assess risk.

By presenting comprehensive financial projections and analysis, you demonstrate your financial acumen and ability to make informed business decisions. This section showcases your commitment to transparency and financial stability.

Implementation Plan and Timeline

An effective implementation plan is essential for turning your business plan into reality. This section outlines the steps and timeline required to execute your strategies and achieve your goals.

Begin by breaking down your objectives into actionable tasks. Assign responsibilities to team members and establish deadlines for each task. This level of detail ensures everyone is aligned and accountable, fostering efficient execution.

Create a timeline that outlines the sequence of activities and milestones. This visual representation provides a clear overview of your startup’s progression and keeps everyone focused on the big picture. Regularly review and update the timeline to accommodate changes and ensure timely execution.

By presenting a comprehensive implementation plan and timeline, you demonstrate your ability to translate your vision into actionable steps. This section showcases your organisational skills and commitment to achieving your business goals efficiently.

Measuring Success Metrics and KPIs

Measuring success is a crucial aspect of any business plan. This section outlines the key metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) that will help you assess your startup’s progress and make informed decisions.

Identify the metrics that align with your business goals. These could include revenue growth, customer acquisition cost, customer lifetime value, or employee productivity. Clearly define each metric and establish benchmarks for success.

Next, outline the KPIs that will guide your decision-making process. These could include sales conversion rates, website traffic, or customer satisfaction scores. Regularly track and analyse these KPIs to identify trends and areas for improvement.

By defining and monitoring success metrics and KPIs, you create a data-driven approach to business management. This section demonstrates your commitment to continuous improvement and accountability, ensuring your startup remains on the path to success.

The Roadmap to Success

In conclusion, a well-crafted business plan serves as your startup’s roadmap to success. By understanding your audience, conducting thorough market research, and defining clear goals, you lay the foundation for a thriving business.

Remember to tailor your plan to meet the needs of potential investors and partners, showcasing your unique value proposition and strategic vision. Develop a comprehensive marketing plan, outline your organisational structure and management team, and provide realistic financial projections.

With a detailed implementation plan, clear metrics, and KPIs, you can effectively execute your strategies and measure your progress. Your business plan becomes a living document that guides your startup through challenges and opportunities, ensuring you stay on track towards your goals.

Starting a business is an exciting but challenging adventure. Whether you’re an aspiring entrepreneur, a recent graduate, or an experienced professional looking to transition to self-employment, the road to success involves careful planning and strategic action. In this listicle, we’ve covered seven essential steps to help you turn your business idea into a viable reality.

Step 1: Identify Your Niche

Finding the right niche is the foundation of any successful business. Here’s how you can discover yours:

Brainstorm Areas of Passion and Expertise:

Think about what you’re passionate about and where your expertise lies. Your business should align with your interests and skills to maintain long-term motivation and credibility.

Research Market Trends and Demands:

Analyse current market trends to identify gaps and opportunities. Tools like Google Trends and industry reports can provide valuable insights into what’s trending.

Understand Your Target Audience’s Needs:

Consider the problems your potential customers face and how your business can uniquely solve them. Conduct surveys or informal interviews to gather direct feedback.

For example, Sarah, an aspiring entrepreneur, found her niche by combining her passion for creative branding with the increasing demand for digital marketing services among small businesses.

Step 2: Conduct Market Research

Market research is crucial to understand your target audience and competitors. Here’s how to conduct effective research:

Analyse Your Competitors:

Identify who your competitors are and what they offer. Look at what works for them and what doesn’t. Tools like SEMrush and SimilarWeb can help you gather competitive intelligence.

Gather Data on Your Target Audience:

Understand your audience’s preferences, behaviours, and purchasing power. Use online surveys, focus groups, and social media analytics to collect this data.

Use Surveys and Interviews:

Directly engage with potential customers to get their opinions and feedback. Platforms like SurveyMonkey and Jotform make it easy to create and distribute surveys.

For instance, Tom, a recent graduate with a software solution idea, used these methods to confirm there was a demand for his product among small businesses.

Step 3: Create a Business Plan

A solid business plan serves as a roadmap for your business. Here’s what to include:

Define Your Business Goals, Mission, and Vision:

Clearly articulate what you aim to achieve, your mission statement, and the vision for your business.

Detail Your Products or Services:

Describe what you will offer, how it benefits your customers, and what makes it unique.

Include a Marketing and Sales Strategy:

Outline how you plan to attract and retain customers. This should encompass your sales channels, pricing strategy, and promotional activities.

Financial Projections and Operational Plan:

Provide detailed financial forecasts, including revenue projections, cost estimations, and profit margins. Also, describe your operational structure and processes.

Emily, an experienced professional, found that a comprehensive business plan gave her the confidence to transition from her corporate job to starting her consultancy business. If the idea of writing a business plan feels like a difficult task, sign up to our free online workshops that will take you through each of the steps above.

Step 4: Secure Funding

Securing adequate funding is vital for getting your business off the ground. Here are some options:

Personal Savings:

Using your savings can be a straightforward way to fund your startup without incurring debt.

Loans:

Consider applying for a business loan. Many banks offer tailored loans for startups with competitive interest rates.

Investors:

Seek out angel investors or venture capitalists who are interested in your industry. Pitch your business effectively to attract their investment.

Crowdfunding:

Platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo allow you to raise funds from a large number of people who believe in your idea.

Grant funding:

Local business owners who sign up to our Business for Future programme will have the opportunity to apply for grant funding, that doesn’t have to be repaid and can be used for capital costs.

Step 5: Choose a Business Structure

Selecting the right business structure is crucial for legal and tax purposes. Here’s a brief overview:

Sole Proprietorship:

This is the simplest structure, where you own and operate the business alone. However, it doesn’t offer personal liability protection.

Partnership:

Involves two or more people sharing ownership. Partnerships can be general or limited, each with different liability implications.

Limited Liability Company (LLC):

Combines the benefits of a corporation and a partnership. It offers personal liability protection without the complexities of a corporation.

Corporation:

A more complex structure that provides strong liability protection but comes with more regulations and tax requirements.

Consult with a legal or financial advisor to determine the best structure for your business if you’re unsure.

Step 6: Register Your Business

Properly registering your business ensures you meet all legal requirements. Follow these steps:

Choose a Unique Business Name:

Your business name should be memorable and reflect your brand. Ensure it’s not already in use by checking with your local business registry.

Register with Local Councils and National Government Agencies

Depending on your location, you may need to register your business at multiple levels. Check the specific requirements in your area.

Obtain Necessary Licenses and Permits:

Different industries require different permits. Make sure you have all the necessary licenses to operate legally.

Step 7: Build Your Brand and Launch

A strong brand and a successful launch are key to attracting customers. Here’s how to do it:

Create a Professional Logo and Website:

Your logo and website are often the first impressions customers have of your business. Invest in professional design and ensure your website is user-friendly and informative.

Develop a Marketing Strategy:

Use a mix of digital marketing tactics, such as social media, email marketing, and content marketing, to generate buzz and attract your first customers.

Plan a Launch Event or Promotion:

Organise an event, either online or in-person, to introduce your business to the world. Offer special promotions or discounts to encourage initial sales.

Take the Next Step in Your Entrepreneurial Journey

By following these seven steps, you can lay a strong foundation for success. Whether you’re identifying your niche or planning your launch, every step brings you closer to building the business of your dreams.

Something exciting is set to hit Wiltshire. Together with our partners, the University of Bath and techSPARK, we’re focused on two key goals: helping rural communities thrive by supporting the businesses essential to the people living there, and providing targeted support for start-ups in their first two years.

Our mission is simple but powerful: to uplift local communities, impact economic growth, and promote sustainable development. We’re not just talking the talk; we’re walking the walk, grounded in our values of community, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.

“Business Fit for Future”: Investment in you

In August 2024, something remarkable is set to unfold. “Business Fit for Future,” a government funded initiative, will kick off thanks to a successful consortium bid between the University of Bath, techSpark, and us at The Future Smiths.

Awarded by Wiltshire Council, these programmes are a concrete step towards achieving our shared goal of helping start-ups and rural hubs not just survive, but truly thrive.

Lighting the Path for Tomorrow’s Leaders

Our task is twofold, yet intrinsically linked, addressing the unique challenges and opportunities in Rural Hubs across the county and supporting local entrepreneurs. For rural hubs, our focus is on nurturing the sustainability of social enterprises and not-for-profit businesses that serve as the lifeblood of smaller rural communities. Meanwhile, our support for local entrepreneurs is designed to accelerate the creation and growth of start-ups.

Targeting Dreams, Cultivating Success

Our work will be as diverse as it is vibrant, encompassing community and social enterprise leaders in smaller rural places, start-up founders across all sectors, and individuals who, until recently, were economically inactive. This inclusive approach ensures no one is left behind, offering a beacon of hope and a pathway to success for those who dare to dream.

Service Provision: The Foundation of Our Mission

At the heart of our efforts are our service offerings, designed to support, guide, and empower. Whether it’s assisting local entrepreneurs in start-up ventures, helping early-stage businesses identify strong propositions, or providing tailored support for social enterprises in rural hubs, our services are comprehensive and inclusive. We’re not just offering assistance; we’re building a community of thinkers, innovators, and leaders.

Join Us on This Journey

At The Future Smiths, we believe in the power of community and the strength that comes from collaboration. Whether you’re a rural community leader, a start-up founder, or someone looking to make a fresh start, we invite you to join us.

Together, we can shape a future that’s not only fit for today, but also primed for tomorrow. A future where every entrepreneur in Wiltshire has the support, resources, and community they need to succeed. A future where rural hubs flourish, driving economic growth and strengthening a sense of belonging and community spirit.

A Future Forged in Collaboration

This is more than just a project for us; it’s a passion. And we’re inviting you, the dreamers, innovators, and community leaders, to be part of this transformative journey. Together, let’s build a future that’s not only fit for the challenges of today, but also equipped to embrace the opportunities of tomorrow. Join us, and let’s forge a bright, sustainable, and inclusive future for all.

I was lucky enough to be raised my two strong parents. My Dad worked really hard to look after his family with a 4am start every day. He took on a second job to provide but he never complained (well, I never heard it). My Mum was a tough cookie and took control of everything at home. I have definitely gained resilience, perseverance and a good work ethic – from the best.

In the five years prior to launching F&B HR, I worked for a national franchise consultancy based in London. I learnt so much. It was an experience that expanded my knowledge far beyond what I had encountered in my previous HR roles. Despite my long background in HR, I found myself continuously surprised by the intricacies of human behaviour and thought processes. Each day brought forth new challenges, pushing me to grow both personally and professionally.

During my time with the consultancy, I played a pivotal role in its expansion. From nurturing the growth of our team to being at the front of business development efforts, I found my niche in identifying subtle yet impactful areas for improvement within businesses. While I may not have been a natural salesperson, my approachability resonated with our clients.

When Covid hit, the world went crazy but in the world of HR, it felt like it would never end.

Dealing with business owners who were having to make redundancies, seeing people invest everything they had to save peoples jobs, I was working in a landscape that seemed to change each week.

We were often asked what the 5pm announcements would be by Boris and what that would mean in terms of lockdown, furlough and new rules (just to be clear, we only knew what you knew!).

We were seeing people really struggle with their mental health – it was intense. Like a lot of us, the pandemic made me wonder ‘is this it? Is there more to life than this?’. I worked hard and kept going but the hours were long, relentless and the pressures felt huge. This didn’t appear to be stopping anytime soon, so at the end of 2022, I resigned.

I didn’t have another job to go to, but I knew I need time and space. I needed to make my family and my health a priority as working full out for so long takes its toll. I went on a pre arranged trip with my family to Australia. That gave me three weeks of space to think, and I knew I had to make some life changes.

I wanted flexibility, I wanted to be present – I had to cancel way too many things in the evenings to prioritise work and then often at weekends, I was too tired to do anything. Work occupied every conversation and I felt lethargic and exhausted all of the time. I thought I would see how self employed life was and after publicising that on social media, people reached out and I become reconnected with people I had worked with and lost contact with over the years. I haven’t looked back.

I firmly believe in practising what I preach, embodying the values that I seek to instil within the companies I serve. If I am trying to explain best practice and demonstrate what a company can do to incorporate values or to improve a company culture, that needs to come from a meaningful place. Let’s be transparent, up front and trustworthy.

Since starting my own business I have learnt so much. Don’t count your chickens before they hatch, collaboration over competition, and above all; learn to be outside of your comfort zone. It’s where I live now.

I was so nervous going into The Future Smiths. I had severe imposter syndrome. I had to seek validation and asked if they just let everyone in (they don’t!) as I couldn’t believe that someone else felt there was worth in my business and my ideas. Through all of the weekly workshops, we covered every topic that we needed to be aware of. The connections you make in your cohort are like no other. You are in the same boat as others and ideas are shared, shoulders are provided to cry on and there’s plenty of ‘is it me?’. You simply cannot regret joining. Be open minded and enjoy everything you can learn from Simone and Duncan. They will be your biggest supporters.

I was in my mid-twenties when I had the worst episode of panic attacks and depression that left me unable to leave the house or engage with the world. As a result of being at home for months, I started looking into what I could do to help myself while I waited for NHS counselling services to support me. It was then that I started training as a therapist and wanting to get to know ME better.

While going through a journey of self-discovery, I still worked in the corporate world as a very successful pharmaceutical sales rep and studied in the evenings, there was something missing in my life. I felt that I didn’t fit in and I seemed to be living someone else’s life.

It was through what I considered then as a series of ‘unfortunate events’, that I found myself wondering why I was so different and wishing to be ‘normal’. I soon started looking into the whats of my difference and I came about the term ‘neurodiversity’ and ‘neurotypes’. These are conditions that are very normal in our society and should be celebrated and embraced, however, in my home country, Spain, they had a negative tint to them and were not be spoken about.

After years of self-awareness coupled with a huge determination to bring down barriers for those that are affected by mental health conditions or are neurodiverse, I proudly embraced my neurodivergence and accepted me for who I am. As a result, today I am passionate about bringing awareness to organisations and businesses that wish to expand and complement their current diversity, inclusion and equality strategies and their wellbeing and mental health programs.

Having ND Kids myself, I felt it is my duty to advocate for them and improve their life chances in the world and support generations to come to thrive and life better lives,

So in 2020, I established The Missing Link as a business that offers personalised psychoeducational training services to individuals and organisations. The Missing Link bridges the gap between mental health and neuroinclusion training making it easy for organisations to identify areas of support to maximise the experience of their teams, retain and attract talent within the business.

My vision for The Missing Link is to become a catalyst for understanding mental health and neurodivergent conditions, empower growth, inspire change in society and celebrate inclusivity, so organisations are able to navigate the complex journey of mental health and neuro-inclusion.

My mission is to create knowledge and awareness that brings about tolerance and acceptance of differences, and I dream of a world in which no one feels the need to hide and mask who they are but is celebrated for their uniqueness. As such, it is my passion to work with those that share my values of tolerance, equality and inclusion by getting to know their organisational needs, values and culture and design bespoke training programs that really address their needs.

It hasn’t been easy to think of my passion as a business venture, it was only when I joined The Future Smiths, that I felt backed up and empowered to carry on and move forward.

The Future Smiths’ team dedication and support has been invaluable for me, their expertise, their dedication to help me success and their faith in me allows me to push forward knowing there is a professional sounding board ready to listen when I need it.

In the world of electrical contracting, there are innovators who are redefining the industry by placing core values at the heart of their work. Meet Gareth, the visionary behind Core7, a Swindon-based electrical contracting company. Driven by a commitment to service, innovation, quality, and safety, Gareth’s journey is one of bringing a fresh perspective to electrical contracting, fire safety, and facilities management in the Swindon area.

The story of Core7 begins with Gareth’s desire to revolutionise the construction industry and offer a superior customer experience. Gareth was keenly aware of the industry’s challenges, with many companies lacking transparency and integrity. He aimed to break this mould by creating a trusted company that would prioritise client needs and offer honest solutions tailored to each project.

Gareth shared, “I have always been really interested in construction and felt that I could offer a better customer experience. I felt the industry was oversaturated with companies resistant to change, not really offering solutions for clients, just using their industry knowledge to confuse the clients into parting with money. I have never wanted to be a part of that; it’s against my personal values. I wanted to create a trusted company that is honest with integrity, only offering solutions that are right for the client.”

At the heart of Core7’s success is its commitment to exceptional service. Gareth understood that effective communication and customer satisfaction are paramount to building lasting relationships. To achieve this, the company has embraced modern technology and software tools to streamline processes and ensure a seamless experience for clients.

Gareth elaborated, “We have utilised project and staff management software, which helps us create a clear schedule of what we have booked for the client. They can contact us to change the booking, leave feedback, and even see any photos or notes we make as we carry out the works. This is always backed up by our clients being able to call us and talk to someone straight away, to discuss any queries or changes.”

This emphasis on real-time communication and personalised interaction sets Core7 apart in an industry often dominated by impersonal processes. By maintaining a direct line of communication, Gareth ensures that clients are not only satisfied but also actively engaged in the project’s progression.

Innovation is a cornerstone of Core7’s approach. Gareth recognised that staying ahead of technological advancements is crucial for the company’s longevity and relevance. One area where innovation has been impactful is in the installation of commercial electric vehicle charge points. By implementing a back-office function, Core7 ensures the continuous health and availability of these charge points, providing a more effective and lasting solution for clients.

Gareth shared an example, “We frequently install commercial electric vehicle charge points, and recently, for Swindon Borough Council, we implemented a back-office function. This allows us to monitor the health of their EV charge points, ensuring they are always operational and available, with any faults identified remotely as quickly as possible.”

This commitment to embracing technology in a practical and client-centric manner exemplifies Core7’s dedication to offering solutions that meet both immediate needs and long-term goals. By staying informed and adaptable, Core7 not only addresses today’s challenges but also prepares for tomorrow’s opportunities.

Gareth’s journey as the founder of Core7 shines a light on the potential of infusing core values into a specialised field. His dedication to service, innovation, quality, and safety is not only reshaping electrical contracting in the Swindon area but also setting a standard for the broader industry.

Gareth’s vision is clear: “My vision is to bring trust back to the construction industry, with reliable people, doing great things, to give people the service they deserve, and our team enjoying what they do, with pride.”

As the industry witnesses Gareth’s relentless commitment to these core values, Core7 emerges as a beacon of change, igniting excellence, innovation, and integrity in the world of electrical contracting and beyond. In an industry often characterised by opacity, Gareth’s Core7 stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when core values are put at the forefront, promising a brighter and more trustworthy future for clients and contractors alike.

I had just completed my second year at university in India where I was studying computer science engineering, miles away from my home country Yemen, when I confessed to my father that I felt lost. The experience of studying abroad in a totally different culture has opened my eyes to different cultures and ways of life and made me uncertain as to where I belonged. My dad, who was well travelled himself, a graduate of Harvard in economics among many other achievements, had the answer. “You are the bridge between nations and cultures,” he told me.

Over two decades later, these words still resonate in my head and manifest themselves in everything I do. Today I am again living abroad, but this time with my husband and two children. Since India, my career path has changed from engineering and systems analysis, to sustainable development, to journalism, to politics, to academia and now back to sustainable development with a pinch of everything else.

It’s funny how we take on different roles in the various stages of our lives whether on the personal or the professional levels. But our values guide us to be who we are in every mile stone. In 2021 I started a non-profit organisation called 21st Century Forum, aiming to be a catalyst for positive change in the Middle East by fostering effective partnerships between leading international donors and local communities. Or in other words, a bridge. This time it is more than a cultural bridge, you can say it is a sustainable development bridge.

My vision is to create a region where donor interventions are efficiently utilised and have a significant impact on addressing the Middle East challenges, while always respecting and honouring the unique local realities and priorities of the target communities.

I believe that sustainable development is not only a moral imperative, but also a key driver of economic growth and social stability. So I harness the experience I had throughout the years from the different jobs, countries and experiences, mash them up with the amazing network of experts I have access to, and produce a customised concussion that would remedy any sustainable development problem.

It wasn’t easy reinventing myself all over here in the UK after an impressive career back home in Yemen. So I needed to step back and have a sounding board; a professional yet friendly environment that would accelerate my business development and help my organisation become more viable, sustainable and successful. Hence, the Futuresmiths.

In the last six weeks, this initiative provided me with a support community and expert advice. In the course of this journey, I asked questions and found answers that helped me fine tuning my goals, mission, vision and values, learn about branding, business canvas modelling, marketing and referrals, internal organisational culture, accounting and legal aspects of business in the UK. I even have my SMART strategic objectives for the next six years.

I can only go forward from here, bridging between organisations and nations, to help many cross over to the other side, working together for the common good.
