That shift showed up in every corner of the room.

Across the programme, understanding of business foundations rose from 2.8 to 4.1. Clarity around customers grew from 3.0 to 4.2. Confidence in financial and operational needs increased from 2.4 to 3.6. And knowing what to improve in the business climbed from 2.4 to 4.3. These changes represented people finding their footing, trusting their decisions, and recognising their own capability.

The reflections we heard captured that feeling even more clearly.

One participant told us:
“I’ve had the best experience on the Refinery course. Our group brought together such inspirational business owners. The homework was incredibly beneficial and helped me overcome the lack of clarity and confidence in what I do and the change I can create for others.”

Another shared:
“I feel so much clearer about my direction and vision. The Future Smiths are amazing course leaders and I’ve learnt so much to make my business more enjoyable and successful.”

And there was a line that stayed with all of us:
“The Refinery was exactly what I needed at exactly the right time.”

By the end, each person walked away with a clear plan, a stronger sense of purpose, and the confidence to move forward at their own pace. The Marlborough cohort reminded us that progress doesn’t need grand gestures it comes from small, steady steps taken with intention.

With grants ranging from £2,000 to £15,000, this funding is designed to help local entrepreneurs and founders turn plans into progress, reduce financial risk, and get on the path to sustainable growth.

What the Wiltshire Start Up Grant is For

The grants are all about helping new businesses grow faster, smarter, and stronger. They’re there to support:

• New entrepreneurs taking their first steps, with funding linked to launching your business
• Early stage growth to help you reach profitability and compete in your market
• Investments that will make your business more capable, efficient, or competitive

What You Can Use the Funding For

The grant can cover a range of start-up costs, including:

• Launch and marketing – from branding to websites, comms, and promotional campaigns
• Equipment and tech – production tools, machinery, digital technology, or software
• Accreditations and qualifications – helping you meet industry standards or gain professional certifications
• Trading essentials – including digital tools for customer relations or cybersecurity

Who Can Apply

To apply, you’ll need to:

• Be incorporated as a limited company, limited partnership, or formal social enterprise (like a CIC)
• Have been incorporated within the last two years

Becoming ‘Fit for the Future’

The Council will look for a solid business plan as part of your application. They’ll prioritise businesses actively pursuing investment and growth – especially those engaged with mentoring or advice services like our own Start Up programme here at The Future Smiths.

You’ll also need to provide at least 40% of the total investment yourself.

For example:
If your total investment is £20,000, the grant could cover up to £12,000 – with you contributing £8,000 in match funding.
